Car Showroom Lighting Solutions for European Dealerships

Car showroom lighting is the display and task lighting used in vehicle sales areas. In Europe it is designed to EN 12464-1: 300 lx and UGR ≤ 22 across the sales floor, with display bays lifted to 500–1,000 lx so paintwork and trim read correctly.

OLAMLED builds that layer as two track-mounted families — the TK01 LED Track Panel for wide, low-glare cover and the TK-02 LED Track Linear for continuous display lines.

What Car Showroom Lighting Has to Deliver

A dealership showroom asks four things of its lighting at once: reveal the true color of the paintwork, keep reflected glare off glossy panels and glass, hold enough uniformity for handover and inspection work, and stay inside the building's energy budget. These six characteristics are what European specifiers and buyers actually check on a datasheet.
Energy efficient

Efficacy: More Lux per Watt

Up to 160 lm/W. Reaching 750 lx over a display bay with fewer luminaires cuts connected load, track runs and installation hours — the numbers that decide an EU retrofit payback.

Cri>90ra precision

Color: CRI 90 and R9

Ra ≥ 90 with strong R9 keeps red and metallic paint honest, and 3-step SDCM binning stops visible color drift between adjacent heads on the same rail.

Multiple beam angles

Optics: Glare Control on Glossy Paint

60°, 90° and asymmetric 20° distributions, with UGR ≤ 19 options. Aim the wide optics at the floor plane and the asymmetric heads at bodywork so the ceiling is not mirrored in the bonnet.

Compatible with multiple tracks

EU 3-Circuit Track Compatibility

Universal adapter for 3-phase / 3-circuit rails at 220–240 V 50 Hz — Eutrac, Global and Staff profiles — so display zones can be re-aimed and re-grouped when the model line-up changes.

Selectable power1

Control: DALI-2 and Selectable Power

DALI-2, 1–10 V, phase or Casambi-ready drivers, plus an output-selectable option that covers several wattages from one SKU — fewer part numbers for a distributor to stock, and scene control for opening hours versus night display.

Cct seleectable switch

Selectable CCT: 3000K / 4000K / 5700K

An on-fixture CCT switch covers 3000 K, 4000 K and 5700 K. Most European dealerships settle on 4000 K for the display floor and 3000 K for the lounge and handover bay, keeping brand-neutral white without the clinical look of 6500 K.

Lighting Design Targets for a European Car Showroom

EN 12464-1 is the European standard for lighting of indoor work places. It does not list “car showroom” as its own row — a dealership is treated as a retail sales area, with the inspection and pre-delivery bays covered by their own vehicle rows. The table below is how that translates into a working brief, and it is the brief we design to.

Showroom zoneMaintained illuminance ĒmGlare limit UGRUniformity U0Color renderingTypical OLAMLED head

Vehicle inspection and pre-delivery750–1,000 lx≤ 220.60Ra ≥ 90, 5700 KTK01 track panel head, 90°

Zone values follow EN 12464-1 for retail premises; accent ratios are design practice rather than a clause of the standard. Two European specifics are worth flagging before a tender. Glare is judged on a glossy, doubly curved surface — a bonnet mirrors the ceiling, so a compliant UGR figure at standing eye height still needs the wide optics kept off the vehicle and the accent heads aimed from the side. And the target is maintained illuminance: design at the end of the maintenance interval, not on day one, or the floor falls short of the brief within a few years.

Showroom Lighting Design: Send Us the Floor Plan

Send a floor plan with ceiling height and display zones. We return a lighting concept within 3–5 working days: target lux per zone, luminaire count and track layout, UGR and uniformity check, connected load against the existing installation, and IES / LDT files for your own DIALux evo verification.

Where Showroom Track Lighting Is Used

A dealership is not one lighting problem but six. The display floor needs accent and color fidelity; the inspection and pre-delivery bays need flat, high-uniformity task light; the workshop needs robustness. The same 3-circuit track carries all of them, which is why European dealer groups standardize on one rail and change only the heads.

Car Showroom Lighting FAQs

Here are some most popular FAQs during our 17 years experience as a LED lighting solution provider, and please feel free to contact us if you have more questions.

Design the general sales floor to 300 lx maintained, the EN 12464-1 figure for a retail sales area, and lift the vehicle display bays to 500–1,000 lx so they sit 3:1 to 5:1 above the surround. Hero plinths are taken to about 1,500 lx locally. Inspection and pre-delivery bays need 750–1,000 lx with high uniformity rather than accent.

4000 K on the display floor is the European default. It is brand-neutral, reads as clean daylight-white against most paint finishes, and avoids the clinical, blue-tinted look of the 6000–6500 K kits sold for detailing bays. Warm 3000 K suits the lounge and handover area. Mixing is fine — keep each zone to one CCT and hold 3-step SDCM within it.

Metallic and candy paint depends on how the red end of the spectrum is rendered, which is what the R9 value measures — and R9 is not included in the Ra average. A luminaire can show Ra 90 and still make a red car look flat. Ask for the R9 figure on the test report, not just the CRI.

Reflected glare, not direct glare, is the failure mode. A bonnet is a curved mirror, so a luminaire that measures UGR ≤ 19 at eye level can still appear as a hard streak in the paint. The fix is geometric: wide 90° optics kept over the aisle, asymmetric 20° heads aimed at the vehicle from the side, and low-luminance anti-glare optics on anything the customer looks up into.

Yes, if it is a European 3-circuit (3-phase) rail. The universal adapter fits Eutrac, Global and Staff profiles at 220–240 V 50 Hz, so a refit can reuse the installed rail and change only the heads. If you are still on single-circuit track, moving to 3-circuit is what makes separate display, ambient and evening scenes possible.

DALI-2, 1–10 V, phase-cut and Casambi-ready drivers are all available. Most dealer specifications use DALI-2 so opening hours, night display and cleaning scenes can be scheduled per circuit — typically the largest single energy saving in a showroom retrofit after the lamp change itself.

Samples ship in 3–5 days and production orders run 20–25 working days. All showroom track fixtures carry a 5-year warranty and are supplied with CE documentation plus IES/LDT photometric files for DIALux evo verification. OLAMLED has manufactured LED luminaires for 17 years and supports OEM and ODM builds for European brands.
