How to Specify Track Lighting for a Retail Store

Specifying retail track lighting comes down to seven decisions: the track circuit, the beam angle, the color temperature, the color rendering index, the wattage per head, the glare rating and the dimming protocol. Get those seven right and one track run serves a fashion floor, a jewelry counter and a car showroom equally well.

Lighting Design Targets for a European Retail Space

European retail lighting is specified against EN 12464-1, the standard for lighting of indoor work places. It sets a maintained illuminance (Ēm), a glare limit (UGR) and a uniformity value (U0) for each zone of a shop, and those three numbers are what a consultant checks before a fixture is approved. Track heads have to be selected to hit them, not just to look right on the ceiling.

Zone values follow EN 12464-1 for retail premises. Accent contrast ratios are design practice rather than a standard requirement — most retail schemes work at roughly three to five times the general level on a feature display, which is why the accent layer is where the adjustable beam and the higher CRI grade earn their cost.

The practical consequence for a track scheme is that one color temperature and one beam angle cannot serve the whole floor. A sales area at 300 lx and a till at 500 lx with a tighter glare limit are two different specifications, which is exactly why the heads on this page are switch-selectable for wattage and color temperature and offered in both a standard and a UGR <19 optic.

CCT Selectable

One head, several color temperatures. The switch on the fixture covers 2800K–6500K, so a warm 3000K fashion floor and a neutral 4000K supermarket aisle can be served from the same stock item. CRI is >80Ra as standard and >90Ra on request, specified per project.

Wattage Selectable

Power is adjustable on the fixture: 40W–70W on the track panel heads and 30W–55W on the linear heads. That lets one head hit the illuminance a display needs while keeping the connected load of the whole run inside the circuit budget. Other wattages can be set for your project.

Smart Dimming Options

The same head is built in On/Off, 1–10V, DALI and DALI-2 versions, so the fixture drops into a building control or store management system instead of forcing a separate control layer.

Low Glare Design (UGR<19)

The TD series uses a recessed low-glare optic rated UGR <19. That matters most at the till and anywhere staff face the beam all day, which is also where EN 12464-1 sets the tighter glare limit.

Universal Track Compatibility

Adapters are made for the European 230 V three-circuit track standard in 4-wire and 6-wire versions, so heads can be swapped into an existing rail without touching the ceiling.

Will These Heads Fit the Track Already on the Ceiling?

In most European retail refits, yes. The adapters are built for the 230 V three-circuit track standard used across Europe, in both 4-wire and 6-wire versions, so a store can change the heads and keep the existing rail, the existing feed positions and the existing ceiling. That is usually the difference between a weekend refit and a re-wire.

Three circuits, one rail

A three-circuit run carries three independently switchable groups from a single feed — typically window display, perimeter wall wash and general sales-floor light — so the shop can dim or switch zones without extra cabling.

The same head, four control versions

On/Off, 1–10V, DALI and DALI-2 variants share the housing and the optic. One product family covers a basic shop fit and a DALI-controlled flagship, which keeps a distributor’s stock list short.

Retail Track Lighting Questions We Are Asked Most

What is the best lighting for a retail store?

A retail scheme normally uses two layers: a general layer that lifts the whole sales floor to a comfortable level, and an accent layer of track-mounted spotlights aimed at displays, mannequins and end caps. Track lighting is the accent layer, and it is chosen because the aiming can change as often as the merchandising does.

What are the three types of track lighting?

In Europe the practical split is single-circuit track, three-circuit (three-phase) track and low-voltage magnetic track. Single-circuit switches every head together, three-circuit gives three independently switchable groups on one rail, and magnetic systems suit slim recessed ceilings. North American listings instead use the H, J and L designations, which are not interchangeable with European track.

How many track lights can I put on one circuit?

Divide the current rating of the track and its supply by the input current of each head, then leave headroom for inrush. Because the heads on this page are wattage-adjustable, the same run can carry more heads at a lower setting. The 1-phase versus 3-phase explainer works through how the circuits are divided.

How much does commercial track lighting cost?

Price per head is driven by the optic, the wattage, the CRI grade, the dimming protocol and the order quantity — a plain on/off 40W head and a DALI-2 head with CRI >90Ra optics are not in the same band. As a factory we quote per specification, so tell us the configuration and the volume rather than asking for a list price.

What are the downsides of track lighting?

The hardware is visible, so the rail and the heads become part of the interior and have to be chosen for looks as well as output. A badly chosen optic also throws glare into shoppers’ eyes, which is why the low-glare UGR <19 option exists. And feed positions must be planned before the ceiling closes, because moving a feed later is a builder’s job, not an electrician’s.

Has track lighting been replaced by anything newer?

No. Magnetic low-voltage systems have taken some high-end interior work, but three-circuit track remains the standard for retail accent lighting in Europe because it is repairable, re-aimable and stocked by every wholesaler. It is the safest specification when a chain has to relight fifty stores over three years.
