Backlit LED Panel Light
Guide-plate-free panels reaching 160 lm/W — built to your size, CCT, CRI and dimming spec.
What Is a Backlit LED Panel Light?
A backlit LED panel light is a flat luminaire whose LEDs sit directly behind the diffuser, facing the room, so the light reaches the diffuser without passing through a light guide plate. Removing that plate is the whole design argument: fewer optical layers mean less absorbed light and one less sheet of PMMA to buy.
Three consequences follow from that structure:
- Higher light output — efficacy reaches 160 lm/W because no guide plate absorbs light on the way out.
- Lower unit cost — the light guide plate is the most expensive component in an edge-lit panel, and a backlit panel does not have one.
- Flexible mounting — the same body recesses, surface-mounts or suspends, so one specification covers a whole building.

Backlit vs Edge-Lit LED Panel Light
The choice between the two panel structures is a trade between output and thinness. A backlit panel reaches 160 lm/W and costs less per unit because it has no light guide plate. An edge-lit LED panel light gives up some of that efficacy in exchange for a 12 mm body and a seamless ceiling appearance.
Specify backlit when lux level and budget lead the brief; specify edge-lit when ceiling depth or visual finish leads it.
| Attribute | Backlit Panel | Edge-Lit Panel |
|---|---|---|
| LED Position | Directly behind the diffuser | Along the frame edge |
| Light Guide Plate | Not required | Required (PMMA LGP) |
| Panel Depth | ~30 mm | 12 mm |
| Luminous Efficacy | >160 lm/W | >120 lm/W |
| Glare Rating | UGR<19 low-glare / UGR>22 standard | UGR<19 prismatic / UGR<22 frosted |
| Unit Cost | Lower — no guide plate | Higher — guide plate adds material |
| Visual Character | Bright, high-output surface | Seamless, ultra-slim ceiling plane |
| Best Suited To | Supermarkets, classrooms, hospitals, high-lux areas | Offices, hospitality, shallow ceiling voids |
