2×4 and 2×2 are the most common. Actual panel sizes are slightly smaller—about 23.75 × 47.75 inches for a 2×4, and 23.75 × 23.75 for a 2×2—to leave about 0.25 inches of clearance for easy installation. This little gap makes sure the fixture sits flush with the ceiling.
